Day 55: The Perfect Balance of Mercy and Justice

Biblical Principle: The Character of God

The Lord is merciful, gracious, longsuffering, and full of goodness and truth, but never forget that the Lord is also just in judgment. His mercy is vast, yet His justice is unwavering.

Exodus 34:5-7 tells us:

"And the LORD descended in the cloud, stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation."

This passage highlights God's dual nature—abundant in mercy yet firm in judgment. He is patient, extending grace to thousands, yet He does not ignore sin. His justice ensures that wrongdoing does not go unaddressed, demonstrating His righteous character.

Practical Application: Emulating God’s Justice and Mercy

Humans often struggle to balance mercy and justice. When we become jealous or angry, our sense of justice can be clouded by personal emotions. Unlike us, God’s judgment is always righteous, and His mercy is always pure.

Nahum 1:2-3 further reinforces this truth:

"God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies. The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet."

God’s jealousy is not like human jealousy. It is holy, righteous, and rooted in His love for His people and commitment to justice. He does not act out of spite but out of divine righteousness. Likewise, as followers of Christ, we must strive to act with justice and mercy.

We must not excuse sin, yet we should show compassion to sinners. When wronged, we should seek righteousness rather than revenge. We are called to uphold truth, yet extend grace where possible.

Living It Out

  1. Recognize God's Balance: Remember that the Lord’s justice and mercy work in perfect harmony. We can trust that He will deal with all things righteously.

  2. Practice Righteous Judgment: Seek to judge situations with wisdom and fairness, rather than out of emotion or selfishness.

  3. Show Mercy: Just as God extends mercy to us, we should extend it to others, forgiving as He forgives.

  4. Trust in God’s Timing: Justice may not always be immediate, but God promises to deal with sin in His perfect time.

As we reflect on these truths, let us strive to model God’s perfect character—upholding righteousness while extending mercy. His justice and love are not in opposition but two sides of the exact holy nature. Let us live by His example.

Evangelist Dan Woltmann grew up in the home of full time Christian school teachers. Saved at the tender age of 5, Dan surrendered to preach at the age of 14; he preached his first sermon at 16 to his youth group. He was privileged to meet and to learn from many pillars of fundamentalism and outstanding preachers. From these men he developed a strong conviction on the truth of God’s Word.

Dan’s ministry experience is vast and varied. From starting four Christian service Bible clubs in college, to revitalizing churches and church ministries now for nearly 35 years. Direct one on one to ministry leaders as well as demostrating Biblical Worldview in the corporate world.
