Day 46: Absolute Truth from God’s Word

Understanding the 2nd and 3rd Commandments

The Second and Third Commandments are often misinterpreted as prohibiting idol worship and the misuse of God’s name. However, their significance goes much deeper. These commandments reveal our love for the Lord and remind us that our worship of Him should never be reduced to human limitations. Jesus reaffirms this truth in the New Testament, emphasizing that our relationship with God should be rooted in reverence and trust.

Exodus 20:4-7 states:

"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain."

This passage reminds us that we must worship God in spirit and truth (John 4:24). We are not to limit His greatness by creating physical representations of Him, nor should we misuse His name in frustration or doubt. When we question God’s ability to intervene in our lives or accuse Him of failing us, we diminish our trust in Him.

Practical Application: Walking by Faith

It’s easy to fall into the mindset of following a rigid list of do’s and don’ts. However, authentic Christian living is about walking by faith and trusting that God is big enough to lead us through every situation.

Hebrews 7:19 says:

"For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God."

This verse reminds us that while the law shows us our need for God, it is through Christ that we find true hope and closeness with Him. Today, ask yourself:

  • Are you relying on your understanding, or are you trusting in God’s perfect wisdom?

  • Do you find yourself doubting God’s ability to handle your struggles?

  • How can you deepen your worship and trust in Him today?

Let us strive to live in a way that reflects our love and faith in God. We should acknowledge His greatness and trust in His plans. Our worship should be free from human limitations and filled with reverence, knowing He is always in control.

Evangelist Dan Woltmann grew up in the home of full time Christian school teachers. Saved at the tender age of 5, Dan surrendered to preach at the age of 14; he preached his first sermon at 16 to his youth group. He was privileged to meet and to learn from many pillars of fundamentalism and outstanding preachers. From these men he developed a strong conviction on the truth of God’s Word.

Dan’s ministry experience is vast and varied. From starting four Christian service Bible clubs in college, to revitalizing churches and church ministries now for nearly 35 years. Direct one on one to ministry leaders as well as demostrating Biblical Worldview in the corporate world.
