Do we know why we act in specific ways in our Christian life?

If someone were to ask you how you would define your Christian life, how would you respond? Would you describe it by outlining your actions or focusing on your beliefs? This distinction is critical, as James, the brother of Jesus, makes it clear that both faith and works must be present in the life of a believer. James 2:20 says, “But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?”

This verse tells us that faith is not just about professing belief but is demonstrated through actions that reflect those beliefs. For example, when it comes to church attendance, Bible study, or acts of service, the question often arises: Why do I do this? If the answer is "because it’s what I’ve always done" or "it’s expected of me," then our actions may be detached from a deeper understanding of the principles that should drive those actions.

In contrast, when we understand that every act of service, every word spoken, and every worshipful moment is an outflow of the truths we hold in faith, our actions become more intentional and purposeful. Our works then serve as proof of the faith that lives within us.

Practical Steps for Application:

So, how do we begin to put this into practice today?

• Seek Out Biblical Truths: Spend time in Scripture daily, searching for the truths that will guide your decisions, shape your thoughts, and inform your actions. The Bible is full of principles meant to transform our lives.

• Apply What You Learn: As you read the Bible and learn these principles, look for opportunities to apply them in your daily life. For example, if you learn about the importance of forgiveness, actively seek to forgive those who have wronged you.

• Reflect on Your Actions: At the end of the day, take time to reflect on your actions. Ask yourself: Did I live by the principles of God's Word today? If not, what can I do differently tomorrow?

• Live Out Your Faith with Purpose: Be intentional about how your faith influences your actions. Whether it’s in your family, your work, or your community, strive to make every decision reflect the truths you believe.
