Day 100: The Relationship Between Belief and Action in Our Christian Walk

Biblical Principle – Absolute Truth from God’s Word:

As Christians, it’s essential to reflect on the reasons behind our actions—whether in our relationship with Christ or in our public worship. The question that we should all ask ourselves is: Why do you do what you do? This question challenges us to look beyond the surface of our daily routines and worship practices to the deeper foundations of our faith. Do we know why we believe what we believe? Do we know why we act in specific ways in our Christian life?

If someone were to ask you how you would define your Christian life, how would you respond? Would you describe it by outlining your actions or focusing on your beliefs? This distinction is critical, as James, the brother of Jesus, makes it clear that both faith and works must be present in the life of a believer. James 2:20 says, “But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?”

This verse tells us that faith is not just about professing belief but is demonstrated through actions that reflect those beliefs. Our faith should not be a passive declaration but an active engagement with the truths found in God’s Word. Let’s take a closer look at how we can define the two sides of our Christian walk:

  1. Faith Defined by Biblical Principle: Our faith is rooted in the absolute truths found in God’s Word. For this discussion, let’s use the term "principle" to represent what we believe—the eternal truths of Scripture. These unchanging, foundational beliefs shape our worldview and guide us in all things. Principles like God’s love, grace, salvation through Christ, the sanctity of life, and the importance of living according to God’s commands are the core of our beliefs.

  2. Works Defined by Practical Application: Conversely, our "practical" actions refer to how we live out these principles in our everyday lives. Our works should reflect the beliefs we hold dear. These actions are the tangible expressions of our faith, whether it’s helping someone in need, being a witness for Christ, worshiping with sincerity, or living a life of integrity.

Practical – Works that Apply Biblical Principles:

As we reflect on our Christian walk, we must ask ourselves, What am I doing today to find the truths from God’s Word and apply them in my life? How can we ensure that our actions are consistent with the principles we profess to believe?

Many people I’ve encountered in ministry have struggled with why they do what they do. For example, when it comes to church attendance, Bible study, or acts of service, the question often arises: Why do I do this? If the answer is "because it’s what I’ve always done" or "it’s expected of me," then our actions may be detached from a deeper understanding of the principles that should drive those actions.

In contrast, when we understand that every act of service, every word spoken, and every worshipful moment is an outflow of the truths we hold in faith, our actions become more intentional and purposeful. Our works then serve as proof of the faith that lives within us.

Practical Steps for Application:

So, how do we begin to put this into practice today?

  • Seek Out Biblical Truths: Spend time in Scripture daily, searching for the truths that will guide your decisions, shape your thoughts, and inform your actions. The Bible is full of principles meant to transform our lives.

  • Apply What You Learn: As you read the Bible and learn these principles, look for opportunities to apply them in your daily life. For example, if you learn about the importance of forgiveness, actively seek to forgive those who have wronged you.

  • Reflect on Your Actions: At the end of the day, take time to reflect on your actions. Ask yourself: Did I live by the principles of God's Word today? If not, what can I do differently tomorrow?

  • Live Out Your Faith with Purpose: Be intentional about how your faith influences your actions. Whether it’s in your family, your work, or your community, strive to make every decision reflect the truths you believe.

Conclusion:

Aligning our beliefs with our actions is at the heart of our Christian life. Our faith is not just a matter of what we profess to believe but is a living, breathing reality demonstrated through the works we do. To be faithful followers of Christ, we must constantly evaluate why we do what we do, ensuring that our works are consistent with the principles of God’s Word. As James reminds us, "Faith without works is dead." Let’s strive to live lives that reflect the truth of what we believe and how we live it out in the world around us.

As you go about your day, think about how you are living out the principles of Scripture. What steps can you take to better align your actions with the truths you hold dear? May our lives testify to Christ's transforming power in us.

Evangelist Dan Woltmann grew up in the home of full time Christian school teachers. Saved at the tender age of 5, Dan surrendered to preach at the age of 14; he preached his first sermon at 16 to his youth group. He was privileged to meet and to learn from many pillars of fundamentalism and outstanding preachers. From these men he developed a strong conviction on the truth of God’s Word.

Dan’s ministry experience is vast and varied. From starting four Christian service Bible clubs in college, to revitalizing churches and church ministries now for nearly 35 years. Direct one on one to ministry leaders as well as demostrating Biblical Worldview in the corporate world.
